In 2016, Professor Erik Nielson (University of Richmond) and Professor Andrea Dennis (University of Georgia School of Law) began collecting information on criminal cases where prosecutors used rap artistic expression as evidence. As the professors were writing their groundbreaking book, Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics, and Guilt in America, Professor Dennis worked with her law students and journalist Jaeah Lee to collect and assemble data on “rap on trial” cases in a more systematic way. Building on this foundation, today Professor Nielson and his research assistant, Angel Auman, continue to collect “rap on trial” data and organizing it in user-friendly formats. To date, they have identified and documented over 800 "rap on trial" cases.
